Orcas and Encounters of the Third Kind

Orcas Close to Shore on Vashon Island, WA

Orcas! And just where was I the day all three Puget Sound Orca pods, J, K, L, swam by my island, cavorting so close to shore that their race toward Point Defiance caused some sizable waves. Perhaps just as delightful as this Pt Robinson promenade was the enthusiastic response of the lucky onlookers.

My closest encounter with an orca came from the opportune viewpoint of a Washington ferry: When Delight Swims By, Look Up.

  1. How exciting!! To be able to see them in the wild
with their dorsal fins so erect doing whatever they
please including entertaining us!! Just awesome :o)

  2. Tom…thank you so much for sharing! How amazing, and gorgeous is that!! You must have been thrilled filming such a blessed event…wish I was there. I have seen similar whale activity, but at a much further distance..lucky you! 🙂

  3. I was disappointed I missed that. I do have a fantastic Orca memory or two…saw Springer up close a few times. Also there was one magical Christmas I will never forget. I was on my way to work, had celebrated with daughter and her fiancé the night before so they were on the boat too…we were no where near each other in line – but ended up right next to each other on the boat….and to add to that nice serendipity we looked up and saw a pod of Orcas. It was a beautiful Christmas morning, sunny and bright and those Orcas did the Nutcracker Suite for us all the way to Seattle!!! Breaching over and over it really did seem intentional. It is one of my favorite memories of all time.

  4. Oh WOW! I would love to have seen that!
My brother lives at Coogee Beach in NSW, Australia. He sends me texts when the whales come into the bay to play. He says you can hear them calling to each other…

  5. What a delight to find your blog. I could have read for hours. Your way with words and pictures put a smile on my face.

In each time I find something new to read I am reminded of the twinkle in your eyes.
